What's involved with being a climbing instructor at camp?

As a climbing instructor, your main responsibility is ensuring everyone's safety, whether on the rock climbing wall or the high ropes. You'll check harnesses and belays, teach beginners how to climb, and work with other counselors to maintain a safe and secure environment. This role requires alertness and responsibility to guide campers effectively.

You don't need specific qualifications, just basic knowledge of ropes and climbing equipment.
There are roles available for both low and high ropes jobs, so it's about your comfort level with the equipment.

How can I apply for ropes and climbing instructor jobs at summer camp?

When starting your application, you’ll be asked to select your top skills. Choose ropes and climbing. Make sure to include any details about your experience on the high ropes or climbing wall, and you'll have a good chance to nail down a climbing job at camp.

How many children will I be coaching in one session?

You won't be lonely working a climbing job at camp. Depending on how much equipment and space is available at the climbing centre, you'll teach groups of about 10-30 campers. There will be 1 counselor for every 6-10 campers, so you'll have lots of help.

Will I get training before I start my climbing instructor job?

On arrival at camp, you'll have a week of training on the climbing wall and high ropes course to get prepared for your climbing instructor job before the campers arrive. You'll get comfortable with the equipment at the climbing centre, and spend the first week of your new job climbing the wall yourself.
